A Tribute to Art Director Samir Chanda



This evening, Bollywood Industry faced yet another tragic moment, as the most famous & talented Art Director & Production Designer, Mr. Samir Chanda, breathed his last in a hospital in Mumbai. He died of a heart attack & was 58 years of age. His sudden & untimely demise has come as a great shock to everyone.

Samir Chanda, a trained painter from Calcutta Art College, was known for his knowledge & understanding of Indian art and architecture ranged from the recreation of sets from the 10th century to the modern contemporary world.

He has worked closely with some popular names of the Indian Film Industry like Mrinal sen, Shyam Benegal, Mani Ratnam, Vishal Bharadwaj and Omprakash Mehra. He had several films to his credit like Guru, Omkara, Rang De Basanti, Dil Se, Aks, Raavan, Krrish and Ram Lakhan. He had also worked in Bengali films like Kaalbela, Kalpurush with the latest being Moner Manush.

Samir Chanda had won the National Film Award for Best Art Direction thrice in his 32-year-old career. He also won the Filmfare Award for his movies Omkara & Guru.
